      Mining

We hold an extensive private collection of Geological, Environmental and Mining records.  Our database has been developed over a long period of years and is a valuable comprehensive analytical tool.

We hold geological maps covering the whole of Scotland with over 4,000 abandonment plans, 500 geological, 500 County geological and 350 OS maps.  Our database provides our Geotechnical engineers with the information required, in many cases to provide an instant decisive response to our clients specific needs.

We provide Mining Reports for Commercial and Private Developments and existing properties along with Coal Mining Risk Assessment Reports (CMRA's).

The Legacy of our Mining Ancestors

The Law Society of Scotland recognises the fact that practically most of Central Scotland has been undermined to some extent.

The above map shows the general boundaries of the Ayrshire, Central, Fife and Lothian Coalfields.

Considerable amounts of extraction have also taken place of ironstone, oil shale, limestone and fireclay.  While some of the workings lie at a considerable depth, giving no further cause for concern, many areas still contain shallow workings and shafts.

While you may think you know where the problematic areas are, due to the complexities of the geological structure and incomplete nature of some mining records, you may be treading on dangerous ground, in more ways than one.

NPL Environmental (NPLE) can provide a full appraisal of the underlying geology and likelihood of mining. You will find that in most cases the contents of our reports are more comprehensive than coal reports alone, are in plain English, understandable and meaningful, covering most minerals, not just coal.
